DPD Chairman Urges Acceleration of Waste-to-Energy Programme Following Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire

The chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin, is pushing for the acceleration of the waste-to-energy programme following a fire at the Jatiwaringin final disposal site (TPA). He stressed that waste should not merely be processed, but must be converted into energy. “Waste management should not only be about processing, but about how waste that has so far been ineffective, unmanaged, and even harmful, is instead transformed into energy,” Sultan told reporters at the Indonesian Parliament complex on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Sultan stated that he has already spoken with Danantara regarding this matter. According to him, the waste-to-energy programme has commenced this year. “Danantara is involved with waste-to-energy. It should have started this year; if I am not mistaken, there are five major waste-to-energy pilot projects that have already begun,” he explained. As a regional representative institution, the DPD will carry out its oversight function to ensure that waste management issues do not cause wider impacts on the community. “On one hand, we are taking on the role of parliament in accordance with our duties, which is to conduct oversight to ensure that this problem does not have a broader impact,” he concluded. Sultan added that the DPD has been paying attention to waste management issues through the deliberation of waste management regulations. “As far as I know, the DPD, through its committees, has a legislative programme for a law on waste management,” he said. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has confirmed that progress in extinguishing the land fire at the Jatiwaringin final processing site in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has shown significant improvement, with 45 percent of the affected area successfully extinguished. The Head of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, stated that this achievement was recorded on the seventh day of emergency response operations since the fire first broke out at the waste disposal facility. “The extinguishing progress has advanced significantly, reaching 45 percent of the total 14-hectare burned area,” he said in a statement on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. Abdul explained that to accelerate the localisation of the embers, the regional government, together with the central government across ministries and agencies, continues to synergise and optimise firefighting operations through a combination of ground and air task forces.
