NZ issues new Bali travel warning
NEW ZEALAND: The New Zealand government on Friday issued a new
warning about travel to Indonesia, even though it is paying for
80 people to go to Bali next month for services on the first
anniversary of the devastating terrorist bombing that killed 202
people on the resort island.
The foreign ministry cited continued reports that further
attacks were being planned and could occur at any time. It also
said security for those going to the services on Oct. 12 could
not be guaranteed.
The ministry is advising against all tourist and non-essential
travel to Indonesia, including Bali, but said the government
understood that some New Zealanders might judge their attendance
at the commemorative services to be essential.
There were only three New Zealanders among the Bali dead, but
the government agreed to pay travel costs for families of the
victims, who were either in the two bars worst hit in the blasts
or were injured or suffered in the immediate aftermath. -- DPA
