Dozens rally over corruption

Dozens rally over corruption

JAKARTA: Dozens of youths grouped under the North Maluku Salvation Movement demonstrated in front of the Attorney General's Office on Monday, demanding an investigation into the alleged corruption involving some of the province's officials.

The rally followed the latest report from the Development Finance Comptroller, which found that Rp 17 billion (US$1.9 million) in state funds had been misused by provincial officials.

Led by Al Farabi Hanafi, the demonstrators demanded that the state prosecutors question former provincial secretary Thaib Armayin, who they said was responsible for misusing the funds.

They said two local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) had reported the irregularities to the Attorney General's Office, but received no response.

The youths also demanded the dismissal of prosecutors who tried to cover up the case. -- Antara
