Dozens of 'Sekolah Rakyat' Ready to Expand Access to Quality Education as New School Year Begins
The government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education is beginning to be felt by the public. As the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS) for the 2026/2027 academic year commences, dozens of newly completed ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ (People’s Schools) are ready to welcome students across various regions in Indonesia.
The construction of these schools is part of an effort to equalise educational infrastructure, including reaching the frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged regions (3T). With the operation of these schools, it is hoped that more Indonesian children will gain access to proper and high-quality educational facilities.
In the second phase, the construction of Sekolah Rakyat undertaken by PT Nindya Karya (Persero) is spread across 20 locations in four provinces: South Sulawesi, North Sumatra, East Java, and Maluku. The locations include Bone Regency, Sinjai Regency, Makassar City, Takalar Regency, Medan City, Deli Serdang Regency, Serdang Bedagai Regency, South Tapanuli Regency, Padang Sidempuan City, Pasuruan City, Pasuruan Regency, Kediri City, Kediri Regency, Malang Regency, Blitar City, Trenggalek Regency, Jember Regency, Banyuwangi Regency, Tual City, and Central Maluku Regency.
These educational complexes not only feature school buildings for elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels but are also equipped with teacher housing, student dormitories, canteens, mosques, places of worship, and multipurpose halls. To support a more comprehensive learning process, several areas are also equipped with green open spaces, educational parks, jogging tracks, basketball courts, multipurpose areas, and even FIFA-standard football pitches. All facilities are supported by an environmental management system designed to create a sustainable educational area.
Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stated that the construction of Sekolah Rakyat is a tangible manifestation of the government’s commitment to strengthening the quality of human resources through the provision of equitable educational infrastructure. ‘The construction of these Sekolah Rakyat is a concrete form of the government’s commitment to building superior human resources and supporting equal access to education,’ Dody said on Tuesday (14/7/2026).
Meanwhile, President Director of PT Nindya Karya (Persero) Firmansyah noted that the start of the MPLS signifies that the development results are already providing direct benefits to the community. ‘We are grateful that the construction of Sekolah Rakyat, a mandate from the government, has now entered the utilisation stage. The commencement of MPLS activities is proof that the results of the development carried out by Nindya Karya can already be directly felt by the community. The success of this project is not only measured by the completion of construction but by the benefits that will continue to be felt by the nation’s future generations,’ he said.
As the state-owned enterprise entrusted with the project, PT Nindya Karya stated that the entire construction process was carried out with a focus on quality, occupational safety, and timely completion. ‘The company has also ensured that all facilities are ready for use from the first day of teaching and learning activities, thereby supporting the government’s strategic programme to improve the quality of national education,’ Firmansyah added.
