Dozens of elderly join Rumah Zakat's Ramadan fast-track Qur'an lessons, learning Alif Ba Ta
INDRAMAYU – A total of 45 elderly people participated in Ramadan Kilat Qur’an lessons held at the Saung Belajar Lansia in Tegalurung Village, Balongan Sub-district, Indramayu Regency, on Thursday, 5 March 2026. The activity was initiated by Rumah Zakat through the Desa Ramah Lansia programme.
Of all the participants, only half are fluent in reading the Qur’an. The other half cannot read the Qur’an yet and are being taught to read with the Iqro book.
The elderly who are learning Iqro show no less enthusiasm than those who can recite Qur’an fluently. Although they stumble and with memory that has weakened and diminished eyesight, they continue to try to pronounce the letters of the Hijaiyah.
“I’ve never been able to read the Qur’an, so I’m teaching Iqro. Here, I can learn a little at a time. If I’m not taught, I can’t do it,” said an elderly participant named Kasniti (75).
Rumah Zakat Inspirasi volunteer, Lastri Mulyani, explained that through Ramadan Kilat Qur’an lessons, they facilitate the elderly to interact more with the Qur’an during this Ramadan. Lastri said the Ramadan Kilat programme for the elderly will run for ten days from 2 to 12 March 2026. The programme is its fifth year.
In addition to recitation, participants also receive spiritual nourishment through kultum, or talks by different ustadz each day. Moreover, this Ramadan, they are also introducing the Sedekah Sampah programme for the elderly.
