Dozens of Bank Employees Fired After Using Fake Keyboards to Simulate Activity

Technology can facilitate deceptive practices intended to mimic work activity within a company, a fact recently uncovered in a report from a major bank. Wells Fargo has announced the dismissal of several employees caught pretending to work using fake keyboard and mouse simulation tools. This technology creates the illusion that employees are actively engaged in tasks.

‘After reviewing allegations involving the simulation of keyboard activity that created the impression of active work,’ the company stated in its filing to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINerm) regarding the reasons for the dismissals, as reported by Quartz. A Wells Fargo spokesperson emphasised that the bank maintains high standards for its staff and does not tolerate such unethical behaviour.

The device used, known as a ‘mouse jiggler’, keeps the mouse moving and prevents the computer from entering sleep mode. By using these jigglers, employees can ensure their computers remain active even when they are not actually working. Such devices are easily accessible on the market and gained significant popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many companies implemented long-term remote work policies.

These tools enable employees to feign productivity because they are not under the direct physical supervision of managers as they would be in an office setting. The debate surrounding work-from-home (WFH) and work-from-anywhere (WFA) models has been ongoing, with significant opposition from those concerned about employee engagement. According to Gallup’s ‘State of the Global Workplace’ report, 62% of workers worldwide are not engaged in their jobs, while 15% are actively disengaged, often citing poor management or poor working conditions as reasons for seeking new employment.
