Dozens Killed in Myanmar's Prahara Region Explosion
A powerful explosion occurred in northeastern Myanmar, killing dozens of people. The blast took place at a building reportedly storing explosives for mining activities on Sunday, 31 May, in Kaungtup village, Namhkam township, approximately three kilometres from the Chinese border. The area is controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group that frequently clashes with Myanmar’s government.
The death toll remains unconfirmed, with rescue teams reporting 40 fatalities and around 70 injured. Other sources cited by the Associated Press indicated between 40 and 46 deaths, including children, while AFP reported figures ranging from 46 to 59. Local Myanmar media, including Shan State’s Shwe Phee Myay online outlet, cited 50 to 55 fatalities.
Local reports also stated that the explosion damaged numerous surrounding homes. Rescue teams are still searching for victims trapped under rubble, and Namhkam hospital has reported a shortage of blood supplies for the injured.
China’s state television, CCTV, reported multiple casualties, injuries, and significant structural damage. Initial investigations suggest the blast occurred at a site storing explosives used for mining operations.
In a Telegram statement, TNLA confirmed its economic department stored gelignite for mining and rock blasting, expressing condolences to victims’ families and pledging a thorough investigation. Gelignite, commonly used in mining, can become unstable if stored improperly over time.
Myanmar has been embroiled in civil war since the 2021 coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratic government, with the military junta facing various pro-democracy and ethnic armed groups. TNLA is part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, which advocates for greater ethnic autonomy. Namhkam has been under TNLA control since a major offensive against Myanmar’s military in late 2023. Although TNLA signed a ceasefire with the military in October following Chinese mediation, tensions persist.
