The 30th National Elderly Day (HLUN) will be observed on 29 May 2026 as a gesture of national respect and appreciation for Indonesia’s elderly population. This occasion serves as a moment to honour the spirit, dedication, and contributions of seniors in preserving independence, supporting development, and advancing the nation.
History
The annual observance of HLUN on 29 May stems from the role of Dr. KRT Radjiman Wedyodiningrat, who chaired the first meeting of the Badan Penyelidik Usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (BPUPKI) on 29 May 1945.
As the eldest member of BPUPKI at the time, the 66-year-old Radjiman proposed the philosophical foundation of Indonesia’s state, which became the precursor to the 1945 Constitution.
In recognition of his service and example, President Soeharto officially declared National Elderly Day on 29 May 1996 in Semarang.
HLUN also serves as a reminder of the importance of improving elderly welfare and protection in Indonesia, as stipulated by Law No. 13 of 1998 on Elderly Welfare, which mandates social development to focus on enhancing seniors’ well-being.
Additionally, the government issued Presidential Regulation No. 88 of 2021 on the National Elderly Strategy, emphasising the role of ministries, agencies, and local governments in enhancing care, services, and protection for the elderly.
These policies aim to achieve elderly citizens who are prosperous, independent, and dignified.
2026 HLUN Theme
This year’s HLUN 2026 theme is ‘Resilient Seniors, Growing Indonesia’.
The theme encourages society to view seniors not merely as beneficiaries but as vital contributors to national development.
The life experience of seniors serves as a teacher, their hands remain useful, and their sincere prayers help safeguard the nation. Therefore, seniors must be given space to remain active, healthy, independent, and engaged in social life.
Resilient Seniors
Advanced age is no barrier to staying active and productive. Resilience in seniors is evident through their determination to live, adaptability, and continued connection with their surroundings.
With collective support and care, seniors can maintain healthy, independent lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
Growing Indonesia
National growth is reflected in improved quality of life across all generations, including seniors. This demonstrates that health, welfare, and development outcomes are increasingly equitably shared among the population.
National Elderly Day Logo
The National Elderly Day logo features the ‘HLUN’ logomark, with each letter deformed to represent services provided during the event, such as cataract surgery, accessibility assistance, and healthcare for seniors.

The silhouette eye with a senior icon symbolises cataract surgery, one of the services offered during HLUN.
- Letter L Shaped as Wheelchair
The deformed letter L forms a wheelchair, representing assistive devices and accessibility services for seniors.
- Letter U with Plus Symbol
The red plus symbol on the letter U signifies healthcare services for seniors.
- Letter N with House Silhouette
The house silhouette on the letter N represents homecare services for seniors.
Services
HLUN 2026 will offer various free services directly addressing seniors’ needs, including cataract surgery, ATENSI Assistance distribution, assistive devices and room facilities, free health checks, physiotherapy, civil rights support, social campaigns, strengthening the role of elderly ambassadors, and entrepreneurship programmes for seniors.
HLUN 2026 Implementation Principles
HLUN 2026 will adhere to principles of simplicity, efficiency, and minimal ceremony, focusing on tangible services with direct impact on seniors, such as cataract surgery, health checks, assistive device distribution, and rehabilitation services.
Activities will prioritise regions with high numbers of impoverished seniors, remote, frontier, and outermost areas (3T), and urban zones with many isolated elderly residents.
HLUN 2026 will be implemented through multi-sector collaboration involving communities, businesses, academia, and religious organisations to strengthen care and protection for seniors in Indonesia.
