Downing Street: Starmer and Trump discuss freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

London — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with US President Donald Trump this evening to discuss efforts to maintain freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Downing Street.

“The Prime Minister spoke with US President Donald Trump this evening. The leaders discussed the current situation in the Middle East and the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to end disruptions to global shipping, which have caused rising costs worldwide,” said the Prime Minister’s office.

Starmer also discussed freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

According to several US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal, the White House plans to announce the formation of a coalition this week to escort vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.

Amidst escalating Iran-related conflict, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil and liquefied natural gas supplies from the Persian Gulf to global markets, has come to a virtual standstill.

Meanwhile, insurance companies have begun raising premiums and reviewing coverage for transits amid increasingly heightened security threats.
