Dow Jones Reaches Record High, US Stock Market Gains for the Week

The US stock market closed higher on Friday, 23 May 2026 local time, following a week of gains.

The rally occurred after US government bond yields declined amid market optimism regarding the potential de-escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

According to CNBC, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 294.04 points, or 0.58 per cent, to 50,579.70. This gain marked a new record closing high for the Dow, which had earlier touched an all-time intraday high during trading.

Although all major indices closed in positive territory, the market’s momentum weakened slightly towards the end of the trading session.

Steve Sosnick, Head of Strategy at Interactive Brokers, noted that market participants were currently more focused on the possibility of achieving peace in the Middle East compared to uncertainties that typically emerge ahead of the weekend.

The market is closely monitoring developments in US-Iran relations. To date, there is no certainty as to whether the two nations are moving closer to reaching an agreement to end the conflict.

Expectations of easing tensions also influenced movements in global oil prices.

Brent crude oil rose 0.9 per cent to $103.54 per barrel. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil increased approximately 0.3 per cent to $96.60 per barrel.

However, oil prices have retreated from the peaks reached earlier in the week as market optimism grew that the conflict could be resolved soon.

Stock market movements were also supported by declining US government bond yields.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds fell by almost 3 basis points to approximately 4.56 per cent. Meanwhile, the yield on 30-year Treasury bonds declined by more than 4 basis points to approximately 5.06 per cent.

Previously, volatility in the bond market had dampened stock performance throughout the week.
