Dossier on drug dealer to be completed soon

JAKARTA (JP): Detectives have almost completed their dossier on a foreigner, believed to be African, charged with heroin trafficking after he was rearrested earlier this week.

The head of the Jakarta Police Narcotics Division, Lt. Col. Djoko Satrio, said the man, who has three different passports, escaped from detention in October last year after just a few days in police custody, but was recaptured on Tuesday.

"We have already collected the dossiers and hopefully we can complete them in a few days so that they can be submitted to a court as soon as possible," Djoko told The Jakarta Post yesterday.

He said police would expedite the case to be brought to the court, because the trial of a friend of the suspect facing the same charges has begun.

The suspect and his friend, identified as Ghanian Mustafa Abdul Genewu, were apprehended by Jakarta Narcotics Division detectives on Sept.23. They were in possession of 800 grams of heroin, worth Rp 400 million (US$ 175,000) at the time of arrest.

Police, however, are still in the dark about the real identity of the man because in addition to his three passports he has a student card bearing further names and other information including nationality, occupation, birthplace and age.

Ghanian passport

When recaptured on Tuesday the man claimed his name was Razak Musah, 27, as written in his Ghanian passport.

Earlier police named the wanted fugitive as Malian Ibrahim Saebu, 24.

Despite the suspect's claim that he was not the man who was in police custody for illicit drugs trafficking and later escaped from the jail in October, police are adamant that he was the wanted fugitive. "We have found similarities between him and the wanted suspect, including skin color, height, voice pattern and facial appearance," Djoko said.

He explained the Jakarta police has also prepared an official letter regarding the arrest of the suspect to be sent immediately to the Ghanian ambassador in Tokyo. Ghana is only represented by a consulate office in Jakarta

"Hopefully we will receive an answer that will shed light on this rather bizarre case. At least the ambassador can clarify the suspect's citizenship status, confirming whether he is really a Ghanian citizen or not," Djoko said.

Djoko said police are still hunting several other people strongly believed to have business links with the suspect in an international heroin dealing syndicate. (bsr/bas)
