'Doomsday' Fish Found at Pink Beach Taken Home

Residents around Pink Beach, Sekaroh Village, Jerowaru District, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), were startled by the discovery of an oarfish. The rare fish is known as the ‘doomsday’ fish.

The oarfish was found stranded on the beach by visitors at around 07:30 Wita on Tuesday (25/8/2026) in a dead condition. The fish was large, measuring about four metres in length. It took several people to carry it.

The discovery of the fish then went viral on social media. In a video uploaded to the Facebook account @Baiq Kolby, a flat-shaped fish could be seen with a length more than twice that of an adult. The fish was carried by a group of children and an adult man. The fish appeared motionless.

Sahlan, the Head of Telone Hamlet, Sekaroh Village, confirmed the discovery of the rare fish. He said the fish was found by beach visitors from Central Lombok.

‘It was found this morning. The ones who found it were not our residents, but outsiders who came to camp from last night, visitors,’ Sahlan explained when contacted by detikBali on Tuesday (25/8/2026).

Sahlan said the fish that caused a stir among visitors was suspected to be an oarfish. He admitted it was the first time he had seen such a fish.

‘This is the first time I have ever seen it. Eventually we searched on Google and found its name is oarfish,’ he concluded.

Fish Taken Home

The fish, about four metres long, was found dead and stranded on the seashore. The visitors who first discovered the fish then took it home.

‘It was about four metres long, shaped like a samurai sword, difficult for me to describe because its shape is strange. It has been taken home by the person concerned,’ Sahlan added.

The discovery of the oarfish was then linked to natural disasters and various other negative things. However, Sahlan assured that conditions in the coastal community remained conducive.

‘Even though it is going viral and people are saying all sorts of things, God willing none of our residents are panicking. The condition of the community here is calm,’ Sahlan added.
