Don’t Underestimate It: Co-Drivers Play an Important Role During Mudik
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Long-distance mudik homecoming travel not only demands the readiness of the vehicle and driver but also support from others inside the car. One role often considered trivial is the co-driver or the front-seat passenger. According to Sony Susmana, Director of Training at Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), the presence of an appropriate co-driver can help the driver stay focused during the journey. ‘The co-driver is not merely a front-seat companion. They can help the driver maintain focus, especially on long journeys,’ he told Kompas.com on Wednesday (4 March 2026). In addition, the co-driver can help keep the cabin atmosphere calm. Light conversations or simply keeping company can help reduce fatigue during long drives. According to Sony, an active and alert co-driver is particularly helpful during mudik trips that typically last for hours. ‘If the driver looks tired or sleepy, the co-driver can remind them to rest. Don’t push it,’ said Sony. He added that ideally the co-driver should also be in good physical condition to really help during the journey.
