Don't Overindulge in Carbohydrates During Suhoor: Here's How It Can Negatively Impact Your Pancreas and Kidneys
The notion that consuming large amounts of carbohydrates during Suhoor can make the body stronger during fasting is not entirely accurate. Nutritionist Dr. Rita Ramayulis, DCN, M.Kes, reminds the public to control carbohydrate portions to avoid putting excessive strain on internal organs. According to Rita, uncontrolled carbohydrate consumption during Suhoor can trigger metabolic disorders, especially in the pancreas and kidneys. This occurs due to the process of converting carbohydrates into glucose in the blood.
“Carbohydrates will be converted into glucose. If blood glucose levels are high, the body produces more insulin. This insulin is produced by the pancreas,” said Rita, quoted on Thursday (February 26th).
The surge in insulin hormone production is not without risk. Rita explained that high insulin levels will encourage more glucose to enter cells. If not used as energy, this glucose will become the basis for the accumulation of calories in the form of body fat.
Besides weight gain, kidney health is also at stake. High blood sugar levels make the texture of the blood thicker, which ultimately makes the filtration process more difficult.
“The higher and thicker the blood with glucose, the heavier the burden on the kidneys to filter,” explained the nutritionist, a graduate of Gadjah Mada University.
Many people feel tired and sleepy a few hours after Suhoor. Rita said that this condition is often caused by fluctuations in blood sugar and the body’s hard work in processing metabolism due to excessive food intake.
To overcome this, the Head of the SEA Games 2012 menu consultant suggests that the public change the composition of their Suhoor plate by prioritizing vegetables and lean protein.
“Prioritize vegetables and lean protein. Carbohydrates in moderation,” she emphasized.
For those who are undergoing a weight loss program or want to maintain fitness, Rita suggests choosing complex carbohydrate sources.
Options such as bananas or tubers such as boiled potatoes in limited portions can be a good alternative.
