Don't let RI disintegrate
Don't let RI disintegrate
From Suara Karya
Observing political, economic, social and security
developments in this era of reform, particularly over the last
two years, as children of the nation we have every reason to feel
concerned and confused. Why? If we look back at the history of
the superpowers, our reform movement at present can be compared
with the perestroika launched in the Soviet Union in 1987-1988.
The world then witnessed that then president Mikail Gorbachev,
the initiator of glasnost and perestroika, failed to control all
of the excesses that arose from his reform movement. The longer
the reform plan continued, the greater the threat and danger of
disintegration in that country. The world community ultimately
witnessed perestroika boomeranging on its initiator.
With the advent of the collapse of the communist regimes all
over Eastern Europe in 1989, the Soviet Union also crumbled and
disappeared from the world map at the start of 1991. Will we take
the Soviet Union as an example? The answer should definitely be
"No". However, the worrying developments in our country over the
last few years have received only lukewarm attention from the
political elite. What happened to the Soviet Union could also
happen to our country. The signals to that effect have been
evident since the multidimensional crisis hit the country and led
Indonesia to the most alarming state where the integrity of the
country had dropped almost to zero in the eyes of the
international community.
