REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has rejected apologising to Pope Leo XIV amid their open dispute over the US-Iran war. Trump even asserted that the leader of the Roman Catholic Church had issued an incorrect statement. Trump’s statement is part of his clarification regarding his social media post, in which he appeared to portray himself as Jesus Christ. “I think (in the image in his post) it was me as a doctor and it has something to do with the Red Cross,” Trump told reporters about the post that has now been deleted, on Monday (13/4/2026). According to Trump, the media misinterpreted his post by linking it to Jesus Christ. “I just heard about it and I said, ‘How could they think that?’ It should be me as a doctor making people better, and I do make people better. I make a lot of people much better.” Trump then reiterated his statement to the Pope. He described the Pope as strongly opposing his policy on Iran. “Iran wants to become a nuclear state so they can destroy the world. That will not happen.” Trump also accused the Pope of being very weak against evil. During a question-and-answer session with reporters, where Trump was asked if he would apologise to the Pope, Trump refused to do so. “There’s nothing to apologise for. He is wrong,” President Trump asserted firmly.
