Donald Trump Urges Israel to Refrain from Retaliating Against Iranian Missile Attacks to Secure Final Deal
US President Donald Trump has requested that Israel refrain from launching retaliatory strikes against Iran, citing the United States’ proximity to a “final deal” with Tehran. This move follows Iran’s missile attack on Israel on Sunday (7/6).
In an interview with the news portal Axios, Trump noted that the recent Iranian missile strikes on Israeli airbases resulted in no casualties. He expressed hope that the incident would not trigger further escalation that could jeopardise the ongoing diplomatic process.
“Iran’s attacks did not hurt anyone. I hope Israel will not retaliate,” Trump told Axios journalist Barak Ravid.
Trump emphasised that his primary priority is to conclude negotiations with Iran. While he did not provide specific details regarding the terms, he described the upcoming agreement as a “good deal” that would promote regional stability.
“We are very close to a final deal with Iran. It will be a good deal. I do not want that deal to fail because of what is happening right now,” Trump added.
As a concrete step, Trump plans to contact Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly to request the cancellation of any planned retaliatory operations.
The recent tensions escalated when Iran launched missile strikes on Israeli territory on Sunday night. Tehran claimed the action was a response to previous Israeli strikes in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. Conversely, the Israeli government has maintained that its strikes in Lebanon were a response to provocations and fire from Hezbollah towards Israeli territory. As of the time of reporting, Israeli authorities have not issued an official statement regarding President Trump’s recent request.
