Donald Trump Reported to Support Idea of Ending War with Iran
US President Donald Trump is reported to have held discussions with his senior advisors regarding the possibility of ending US military operations in Iran, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, citing US officials.
Advisors have warned Trump that an escalation of the conflict with Iran could threaten the Republican Party’s prospects in the mid-term elections scheduled for November 2026. In the report, Donald Trump expressed support for the idea of ending the conflict, believing that economic pressure could compel the Iranian government to halt its nuclear programme or cease its activities independently.
However, Trump is said to be disregarding election-related factors when making decisions regarding the war. Conversely, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has extended the deployment of US military personnel in the Middle East, leading to speculation that the conflict could persist into next year. The absence of a specific timeframe for the mission provides Donald Trump with the opportunity to take military action, according to sources cited by The Wallting Journal.
The US has deployed massive forces in the Middle East conflict so far. It is noted that the deployment of 50,000 military personnel to the region could lead to damage to military installations and exhaustion among personnel. Various air defence units have reportedly been deployed in the region for 12 months, significantly longer than the usual 9-month tour of duty, with several other units diverted from Europe having served for over a year.
A number of destroyers, with crews of 300, originally deployed to attack Iran, are now also involved in a blockade of Iranian ports. According to a CNN report citing officials, the US is attempting to shift tactics to pressure Iran, moving from economic sanctions towards military operations.
