Donald Trump Plans to Create AI Force Despite Scientists' Calls for Halt
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to form an ‘AI Force’, or a specialised artificial intelligence unit, amidst increasing pressure for the US government to tighten oversight of the technology’s development.
Trump shared the plan via Truth Social on Saturday (29/9). He also stated that he would appoint an ‘AI Czar’ to lead AI-related policies.
“For this purpose, I am forming an AI Force, much like I did with the Space Force, which was an incredible SUCCESS during my first term. To that end, in the near future, I will announce an AI ‘Czar’ — Only individuals with HIGH IQs need to apply!” Trump wrote, as reported by CNN on Monday (21/9/2026).
CNN reports that there has been no further explanation regarding the duties of the AI Czar or the structure of the AI Force. It remains unclear whether this force will become part of the US military, similar to the Space Force established by Trump in 2019.
Trump maintained his stance that the government will not hinder the development of the AI industry. He noted that the US currently leads China and other nations in this technology.
“We will not, in any way, hinder or hamper the growth of this incredible industry. We are leading China, and the entire world, and I intend to maintain that position!” said Trump.
The plan emerges as debates regarding AI regulation intensify in the US. While AI advancements have driven investment, stock markets, and data centre construction, they have also triggered concerns regarding job losses and the societal impact of data centres.
Trump previously appointed investor David Sacks as an AI and cryptocurrency czar. Sacks stepped down from the position in March after his term as a special government employee ended.
AI regulation issues are also expected to be discussed during several US diplomatic agendas next week, including high-level meetings on AI on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Several tech industry leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, are also scheduled to attend a state dinner at the White House during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington.
A White House official stated that AI security will be on the agenda when Trump meets with Xi.
