Donald Trump Ends NBC Interview Following Heated Debate

US President Donald Trump unexpectedly terminated his interview session on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ program, aired on Sunday (7/6) local time. Trump decided to walk out after engaging in a fierce debate with host Kristen Welker regarding false claims surrounding the election and the riots at the Capitol on 6 January 2021.

Tensions escalated after approximately four minutes of discussion. Trump, appearing to lose patience, unilaterally decided to end the session. “Let’s just end this because I’ve had enough,” Trump stated before removing his microphone. “Thank you, dear. Have a nice day.”

The incident took place in a warehouse in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, a location used for the interview recording before Trump attended an event with farmers last Friday. Trump stood up and left the interview set shortly after making those remarks.

The primary trigger for Trump’s frustration occurred when Welker questioned plans to establish a US$1.8 billion fund. This fund was intended to compensate individuals claiming to be victims of politicised prosecutions. Although the Department of Justice had previously agreed to form the fund to settle the president’s lawsuit against the IRS, the move was halted due to legal challenges and opposition from several Republican senators. However, facing Welker, Trump insisted on his desire to realise the fund. “If it were up to me, I would pay them the money they deserve,” Trump asserted.

The atmosphere grew more heated when Welker pressed whether the 172 individuals who pleaded guilty to attacking police officers during the 6 January riots would be eligible for the funds. Trump refused to provide a definitive answer, instead claiming that FBI agents had invited rioters into the Capitol building. Welker immediately refuted this, presenting facts that there was no evidence of FBI agents directing the crowd into the building. According to the Department of Justice Inspector General’s report, while four FBI informants did enter the building, they did so without official direction, and no active agents were present on-site until reinforcements arrived to quell the riot.

“Those people were destroyed by dirty police and the weaponry of the law. Many of them should receive compensation,” Trump replied.

In addition to the Capitol issue, Trump repeated his claims that the 2020 Presidential Election and recent primary elections in California were fraudulent. He cited the slow vote counting in California as evidence, despite state law allowing mail-in ballots to be accepted up to one week after election day. After Welker repeatedly emphasised the lack of evidence for these claims, Trump began attacking the credibility of NBC and other media networks before finally leaving the location.
