Donald Trump Announces US Troops Withdrawal from Iran within Three Weeks
US President Donald Trump has officially announced plans to withdraw American military forces from Iranian territory within the next two to three weeks. This statement marks the end of a large-scale military operation that has been ongoing since the end of February 2026.
“What I have to do is leave Iran and we will do so very soon,” Trump told reporters in Washington on Tuesday (31/3/2026) local time. “Maybe two weeks, maybe three weeks.”
In his statement, Trump emphasised that the primary objective of the US military intervention—to ensure Iran does not possess nuclear weapons—has been fully achieved. He claimed that Iran’s military strength has been significantly weakened and will require at least 15 to 20 years to recover.
Furthermore, Trump made a crucial claim regarding a regime change in Tehran. He referred to reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as a turning point for stability in the region.
“We toppled one regime, then the second regime. Now there is a very different group there, which I think is much more moderate,” Trump claimed, without detailing the new government in question.
The armed conflict that erupted on 28 February 2026 has had a destructive impact on both sides and the global economy. According to Iranian government data, US and Israeli airstrikes killed more than 1,340 people. Meanwhile, Washington confirmed at least 13 US soldiers killed in the battles.
Regarding the security of energy trade routes in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump stated that the US will no longer take a leading role in securing the area after the troop withdrawal.
“If France or other countries want to get oil or gas, they will go through the Strait (of Hormuz). They must be able to defend themselves. We have nothing to do with it anymore,” he asserted.
During the conflict, global energy prices and the value of the rupiah experienced high volatility due to disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for world oil supplies.
According to President Donald Trump’s statement, the troop withdrawal process is scheduled to be completed within 14 to 21 days from the announcement made at the end of March 2026.
Official Iranian reports record more than 1,340 fatalities on their side, while the United States reported the loss of 13 military personnel due to retaliatory drone and missile attacks.
Trump stated that the US will no longer be responsible for the security of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil-importing countries such as France are urged to independently secure their tanker ships.
