Dompet Dhuafa's Well Endowment Accelerates Clean Water Recovery in Central Aceh

Residents of Wihlah Setie Village, Bintang Sub-district, Central Aceh Regency, are living under the shadow of a health crisis. In the wake of floods and landslides that damaged village infrastructure, access to clean water—the lifeblood of the community—has been completely cut off.

Since 7 February 2026, recovery work has proceeded in stages to restore the flow of clean water to settlements now grappling with sanitation constraints. Field assessments indicate the situation is dire, with an estimated 150 to 250 households losing direct water access to their homes.

Although the water source in the mountainous area remains productive, the destruction of a storage tank or intake and the ruptured piping network buried under landslide debris have paralysed water distribution. With no alternatives, residents have had to rely on rainwater and river flows whose quality has fallen drastically due to sediment-laden mud contamination.

The crisis has not only hit residential areas but has also crippled public facilities such as one mosque, one meunasah (traditional community prayer hall), and a local primary school. The situation clearly raises the risk of serious health problems among the community, from skin diseases to diarrhoea that particularly affects children.

In response to the urgency, Dompet Dhuafa, through its disaster-affected Well Wakaf programme, is pushing to accelerate the rebuilding of clean-water infrastructure so residents are not continually dependent on water sources that pose health risks. Imam, Head of the Wakaf Literacy and Fundraising Department at Dompet Dhuafa, emphasised that restoring the piping network is the top priority because clean water is a fundamental need that cannot be delayed.

In the rebuilding plan, Imam added that the distribution system will use pipe materials better adapted to the unstable ground contours. “In addition to rebuilding the storage tanks, strengthening distribution lines at vulnerable points is also necessary to make this infrastructure more resilient to future disasters,” he said.

As a trusted wakaf nazir institution, Dompet Dhuafa consistently presents the Well Wakaf programme as a long‑term solution for disaster-affected areas across Indonesia. The presence of this programme in Central Aceh is hoped to become a beacon of hope for residents to regain sustainable access to potable water.

Through community participation in the Well Wakaf programme, public support becomes a tangible step towards restoring a life-sustaining water supply and strengthening village resilience to water crises. “Let us work together to restore clean water for our brothers and sisters affected by the disaster in Central Aceh,” he said.

Support and care can be directed via Dompet Dhuafa’s official page at digital.dompetdhuafa.org/wakaf/sumurterdampakbencana. “Every drop of clean water channeled through this wakaf is not merely physical aid; it is an ongoing merit-based blessing and a new hope for the health and welfare of residents rebuilding from the disaster’s aftermath.”
