Dompet Dhuafa Ramadan Endowment Funds Construction of Tahfidz Student Dormitory
As the final ten nights of Ramadan arrive, the atmosphere at Pesantren Tahfidz Green Lido (PTGL) in Sukabumi, West Java, grows increasingly solemn. Amidst the cool mountain air, students remain awake through the night, bent over their individual copies of the Qur’an. They strive to attain the blessing of Lailatul Qadar by increasing their nighttime devotions and submitting their Qur’an memorisation progress.
However, beneath this spiritual devotion, the students face significant facility constraints. Currently, the Qur’an memorisation students at PTGL lack permanent dormitory accommodation. All activities—from resting and independent study to storing personal belongings—are conducted in a single multipurpose room not designed as living quarters.
This situation forces students to share space for multiple activities simultaneously. When some students rest, others in corners of the same room recite their memorisation aloud to meet their daily targets. The absence of partitions and dedicated spaces severely limits privacy, whilst access to bathroom facilities remains minimal, forcing students to queue with dozens of others.
Recognising these conditions, Dompet Dhuafa has taken the initiative to provide a permanent solution through an endowment programme to construct a student dormitory for Qur’an memorisation students. The two-storey dormitory is designed to separate sleeping areas from other activity spaces, providing students with a more conducive and comfortable learning environment.
The construction project is currently in the foundation stage. Construction teams are completing the excavation of bore pile foundations and assembling reinforcing steel as the building’s primary foundation. Additionally, sanitation systems are planned to be more adequate with an increased number of toilets to resolve the long queues that have persisted.
Dini Khairunnisa, the Dompet Dhuafa Endowment Developer at PTGL, stated that the dormitory’s existence is crucial for supporting the learning ecosystem of Qur’an memorisation students. According to her, a dormitory is not merely living quarters but also a space for cultivating discipline and tranquillity for Qur’an reciters.
“We are working to build this student dormitory so they have a proper place to stay. Adequate facilities are necessary so that students can focus more on memorising the Qur’an without being disturbed by other activities in a single room,” said Dini.
High hopes also come from the students themselves. Ghaisan, one of the PTGL students, expressed that the dormitory construction represents new hope for himself and his classmates to study more comfortably.
“I hope this dormitory can be completed this year. Once it is built, we can study and memorise the Qur’an more focussed without having to share a single room for all our activities,” said Ghaisan.
Through this Ramadan endowment programme, Dompet Dhuafa invites the public to participate in constructing the Qur’an memorisation student dormitory in Sukabumi. Every contribution is expected to become an ongoing charitable investment as students safeguard and memorise the divine word.
