CENTRAL ACEH – The Dompet Dhuafa Sustainability Institute has launched a skilled trades training programme for disaster-affected communities in the Sumatra region on Saturday, 14 March 2026. The programme is being conducted in Gewat Village and Patan Nangka Village, Linge Sub-district, Central Aceh Regency, as part of efforts to support economic recovery and community empowerment following the disaster.

According to Abdurrahman Usman, Director of the Sustainability Institute, the 15-day training initiative during Ramadan is being attended by 21 residents from the affected area. Through the programme, participants are equipped with foundational to intermediate skills in building construction. The objective is to enable disaster survivors to acquire practical capabilities that can be immediately applied to the reconstruction of their region.

“Participants are not merely learning theory; they are also receiving hands-on training in safe and proper house construction techniques. These skills are expected to create new employment opportunities for disaster survivors whilst accelerating the recovery process for communities in the area,” Usman stated.

The programme is linked to the construction of 10 temporary housing units (Rumtara) for disaster-affected residents. The construction process will directly involve the training programme participants. In this manner, graduates of the skilled trades school will gain not only knowledge but also genuine employment opportunities whilst rehabilitating their own living environments.

Beyond the training itself, Dompet Dhuafa has distributed construction tools and equipment for both individual and group use. This support enables participants to immediately apply their newly acquired skills and continue developing their capabilities in the trades.

Through the skilled trades school programme, Dompet Dhuafa hopes that disaster survivors will not only recover physically through housing reconstruction, but also experience economic revival through their newly acquired skills.

The programme reflects Dompet Dhuafa’s commitment to delivering recovery initiatives based on community empowerment. The organisation seeks to develop skilled local craftspeople capable of contributing to the reconstruction of disaster-affected regions.
