Domesticated Elephants in Bener Meriah Struggle to Access Drinking Water Following Landslide
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ACEH — A mahout guides a domesticated elephant towards a small river at the Conservation Response Unit (CRU) of the Peusangan River watershed in Negeri Antara village, Bener Meriah regency, Aceh, on Sunday (22/2/2026).
Three domesticated elephants at the CRU are struggling to access the Peusangan River, their primary location for drinking and bathing, due to steep access routes caused by landslides and the widening of the river channel. The elephants have also lost several food source locations in the aftermath of hydrometeorological disasters in the area.
