Domestically Developed Typhoid Vaccine Bio-TCV Launched
PT Bio Farma has launched Bio-TCV (typhoid conjugate vaccine), a domestically developed typhoid vaccine that marks a significant milestone in strengthening national vaccine sovereignty. The launch took place during the Medical Expo FKUI 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday (16/7).
The presence of Bio-TCV underscores Indonesia’s capability in building a comprehensive vaccine ecosystem from upstream to downstream. This process encompasses research, technology transfer, clinical trials, production, and strategies to expand public access through close collaboration between industry, academia, researchers, regulators, and global strategic partners.
Bio Farma President Director Shadiq Akasya stressed that typhoid fever remains a serious public health challenge in Indonesia. According to 2024 WHO data, there are approximately 9 million typhoid cases globally, resulting in 110,000 deaths. In Indonesia, the prevalence of typhoid is estimated at 1.6 percent of the population.
“Bio Farma is introducing Bio-TCV as our contribution to supporting the prevention of typhoid fever while strengthening national health security. This vaccine is the result of a long-term collaboration with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) since 2010, followed by technology transfer in 2013 and joint research and clinical trials with the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Medicine,” Shadiq Akasya stated.
Bio-TCV has received approval from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) and can be administered to individuals from six months of age to adults. In addition to vaccination, Shadiq also highlighted the importance of improving sanitation and promoting clean and healthy living behaviour (PHBS) to reduce the number of cases.
Deputy Minister of Health, Benjamin Paulus Octavianus, stated that self-reliance in the research and production of strategic health products is key to facing future challenges. He emphasised that synergy between the government, industry, and academia is crucial to accelerating innovation that directly impacts the community.
“The presence of Bio-TCV demonstrates that through strong synergy, we can strengthen national health independence and resilience,” Benjamin asserted.
Echoing this sentiment, Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar confirmed that his agency oversaw the entire development process of Bio-TCV. BPOM conducted an accelerated regulatory evaluation without compromising scientific standards to ensure the vaccine’s quality, safety, and efficacy.
As part of the Danantara ecosystem, Bio Farma continues to enhance the capacity of its conjugate technology-based production facilities. This initiative aims not only to meet domestic needs but also to open export opportunities to countries with high disease burdens in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The launch of Bio-TCV serves as tangible proof that national vaccine sovereignty is measured by technological mastery and the ability to meet international standards, ensuring public access to safe and high-quality health products.
