Jakarta – A video showing the assault of a domestic worker in the Sunter Agung area of North Jakarta has provoked widespread anger among internet users.

In the recorded footage, the victim is shown being struck and kicked by someone believed to be her employer. Police have since revealed the circumstances behind the violent incident.

The incident was reportedly triggered by a dispute that occurred inside the home, specifically involving the perpetrator’s place of worship. This was disclosed by Head of Community Relations at North Jakarta Metro Police, Officer Maryati Jonggi.

“At the time, the perpetrator was cleaning the place of worship in her home, but the victim carelessly soiled the place of worship,” she stated on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The incident is not a recent occurrence. Police indicated the incident took place in 2023. However, what is startling is that the victim continues to work for the same employer to this day.

“There was then a miscommunication between the perpetrator and the victim,” she added.

In the widely circulated video, the victim appears helpless whilst receiving punches and kicks. Notably, it was not just one person who allegedly committed the violence. One perpetrator is also seen using what appears to be a belt to assault the victim. During the assault, the perpetrator is heard speaking to the victim, who remains silent.

Despite the physical violence, the perpetrator reportedly apologised following the incident.

“The victim forgave the perpetrator and they reached a settlement not long after the incident,” she said.

The video going viral has brought this long-dormant case back into the spotlight. Police have now intervened to ensure legal proceedings take place.

“The case itself is being handled by investigators from the Women and Child Protection Unit and General Crimes Unit of North Jakarta Metro Police, and it is still under investigation,” she stated.

Police are continuing to examine the facts of the case, including the possibility of criminal charges stemming from the incident that occurred three years ago.
