Domestic Tourism Trips Rise, Outbound Travel Declines
Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the tourism sector recorded positive growth throughout the first half of 2026, spanning foreign tourist arrivals, domestic tourist trips, investment realisation, and hotel occupancy rates.
“Indonesia became the country with the second-highest growth in foreign tourist arrivals in the Southeast Asia region,” she said in a written statement in Jakarta on Sunday (9/8/2026).
Growth in the tourism sector was also supported by high domestic tourist mobility, which reached 630.41 million trips, an increase of 2.71 percent compared with the first half of 2025. At the same time, the number of trips by Indonesian citizens abroad was recorded at 4.46 million, a decline of 2.40 percent, leaving Indonesia with a visit surplus of 2.99 million.
Widi said the achievement was the result of an adaptive strategy involving market pivots, stronger promotion in countries with high growth potential, increased domestic tourist movement, and the development of higher-quality products and destinations.
“The achievement did not happen by itself. The government continues to implement an adaptive strategy, including pivoting or adjusting markets, strengthening promotion to countries that still have growth potential, maintaining domestic tourist movement, and developing increasingly high-quality products and destinations,” Widi said.
Widi said the achievement reinforced the role of tourism as one of the drivers of national economic growth, capable of creating jobs, expanding business opportunities, and encouraging development in various regions.
