Dollar Nears Rp18,000, Purbaya: Many Rumours Creating Uncertainty in the Market

The Rupiah exchange rate has recorded a new record low. According to Refinitiv data, the Garuda currency closed weaker at the level of Rp17,940/US.ThispositionmarksthebreachofanewpsychologicallevelatRp17, 900/US, simultaneously bringing the Rupiah closer to the next psychological level of Rp18,000/US$.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has spoken out regarding this depreciation of the exchange rate. He assessed that the weakening of the Rupiah is related to various rumours within the financial markets.

“There are those saying I instructed banks to conduct stress tests if the [dollar] reaches Rp18,000. However, I have never issued such an instruction,” he explained when met at the DPR on Wednesday (3/6/2026).

“So, there are many issues in the market that are making sentiment towards the Rupiah somewhat uncertain,” he added.

However, Purbaya assessed that he has fulfilled his duty to maintain the economic foundations so that the Indonesian economy continues to run and grows rapidly and highly.

“But if we look at it, my obligation is merely to maintain the economic foundations. To ensure the economy continues to run even faster,” he asserted.
