Dollar Hits Rp18,180, Purbaya Remains Confident Rupiah Can Strengthen Again

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has expressed optimism that the Rupiah could strengthen again in the near future. This comes despite the current worsening condition of the Rupiah against the United States Dollar. Purbaya hopes for a recovery in the short term, following the central bank’s (Bank Indonesia) ongoing efforts to stabilise the currency. “We will see how things progress in the future. What is clear is that we hope the Rupiah can strengthen in a not-too-distant time. We leave everything to the central bank to stabilise the Rupiah exchange rate,” said Purbaya when met by journalists at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas on Monday (9/6/2026). Currently, he noted that the exact level of Rupiah stability is yet to be determined, but the room for appreciation remains quite wide. “Since this is still an early occurrence, we do not know where the stability point lies, but it certainly will not continue like this indefinitely; there will certainly be a new stability, and that is where we will see how the budget is managed. I believe the room for strengthening is still wide open,” he explained. Previously, at the close of trading today, the Rupiah weakened by 0.89%, with the exchange rate for US$1 reaching Rp18,180, marking a new record low for the Garuda currency. The high position of the US Dollar index continues to limit the strengthening potential of Asian currencies, including the Rupiah.
