Dollar down in Asia but up in Eropa

TOKYO (AFP): The dollar lost ground against the yen here yesterday on expectations that tensions between Taipei and Beijing would ease after Taiwan's first direct presidential election.

Towards the end of trading, the dollar was quoted at 106.46 yen here, down from 106.83 yen in New York late Friday and 107.13 yen here Friday afternoon.

Against the mark, it was trading at 1.4751, compared with 1.4750 in New York late Friday and 1.4797 here Friday afternoon.

In Singapore, the greenback changed hands towards the end of trading at 106.30 yen after opening at 106.60, according to rates supplied by the Banque Nationale de Paris.

The dollar was steady at 1.4750 marks while moving down to 5.0520 French francs from 5.0550. The British pound slipped against the U.S. unit, trading at $1.5225 from an opening quote of 1.5330, BNP rates showed.

In regional play, the greenback closed lower at S$1.4070 from S$1.4110 on Friday, to 2.5425 Malaysian ringgit from 2.5450, to 25.25 Thai baht from 25.26 and higher at 2,338 Indonesian rupiah from 2,335.

In London, the pound was being traded at 2.2494 marks from 2.2643 late on Friday and it fell to $1.5240 from $1.5336 at the end of last week.

The dollar was being traded at 1.4760 marks from 1.4769 late on Friday, 106.37 yen from 106.74, 1.1920 Swiss francs from 1.1945, and 5.0560 French francs from 5.0631.

The mark was being traded at 3.4256 French francs from 3.4313, was unchanged at 1,057 lira, and at 84.05 pesetas from 84.01, 0.8077 Swiss francs from 0.8083, and 72.07 yen 72.27.

The price of gold was $398.00 per ounce from $397.50.
