Timing for Observing the Zulhijjah Fast
In Islamic teachings, the Zulhijjah fast can essentially be observed from the 1st to the 9th of Dzulhijjah, ahead of Eid al-Adha.
On the other hand, according to scholars, fasting the full nine days at the start of Dzulhijjah is a highly encouraged practice because it mirrors the noble example of the Prophet Muhammad.
As narrated in hadith:
“The Prophet used to fast on the nine days of Dzulhijjah, on the Day of Ashura, and three days each month.” (Hadith Abu Dawud)
Based on this, it is understood that the Zulhijjah fast is a Sunnah act, so one earns rewards for those who undertake it, but there is no sin in omitting it.
There is no special obligation in the sharia that requires the Zulhijjah fast to be performed in full and in sequence. Therefore, Muslims may observe the fast only on some of the first nine days in the month of Dzulhijjah.
Virtues of the Zulhijjah Fast
According to Nahdlatul Ulama Online, fasting during the month of Dzulhijjah, especially during its first nine days, has greater virtues than fasting on ordinary days. This is because the month of Dzulhijjah is one of the most revered times in Islam and is described as the days best for doing good.
Among the virtues promised by Allah SWT to His servants who perform the sunnah fasting of Zulhijjah are:
- Abundant Reward
Fasting is one of the pillars of Islam that forms the foundation of the faith. Although it is Sunnah, the Zulhijjah fast is highly encouraged for Muslims to obtain abundant reward and increase taqwa toward Allah SWT.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days” (Hadith At-Tirmidhi).
- Forgiveness of Sins
Not only the reward, the Zulhijjah fast can also provide forgiveness and the erasure of minor sins for Muslims who undertake it with faith and sincerity.
“The fast of the Day of Arafah (the 9th of Dzulhijjah) I hope Allah will expiate the sins of the year before it and the year after it; and the fast of the Day of Ashura I hope Allah will expiate the sins of the year before it” (Hadith Muslim).
- Protection from the Fire of Hell
The Zulhijjah fast has great virtue as a day of release from the torment of Hell. On this occasion, Allah SWT grants wide forgiveness to His servants to aid them against the punishment of the Fire.
