Does the Soul See Its Body Being Buried?

JAKARTA — Republika.co.id — When a believer dies, their soul is taken by angels to face Allah SWT. The soul of the believer is shown the paradise that will be their eternal abode.

Subsequently, the soul is shown how the living handle their body and hears what the living say about them. The believer’s soul also witnesses the process of being placed in the grave. After the burial process is complete, two angels visit the soul in the grave and question it.

This information is from the book At-Tadzkirah by Imam Qurthubi:

قال أبو الحسن القابسي رحمه الله: الصحيح من المذهب والذي عليه أهل السنة أنها ترفعها الملائكة حتى توقفها بين يدي الله تعالى، فيسألها فإن كانت من أهل السعادة قال لهم: سيروا بها وأروها مقعدها من الجنة، فيسيروا بها في الجنة على قدر ما يغسل الميت، فإذا غسل الميت، وكفن ردت، وأدرجت بين كفنه وجسده، فإذا حمل على النعش فإنه يسمع كلام الناس من تكلم بخير، ومن تكلم بشر، فإذا وصل إلى قبره وصلي عليه ردت فيه الروح، وأقعد ذا روح وجسد، ودخل عليه الملكان الفتانان على ما يأتي.

Abu Hasan Al Qobisi (may Allah have mercy on him) stated: According to the correct opinion of the school and what the Ahlus Sunnah adhere to, the angels raise the soul until it is presented before Allah the Almighty, who then questions it. If it is among the people of happiness, Allah instructs the angels to take it and show it its place in Paradise. They guide the soul through Paradise to the extent of the washing of the deceased. After the deceased is washed and shrouded, the soul is returned and placed between the shroud and the body. When carried on the bier, it hears what people say, whether good or bad. Upon reaching the grave and after the funeral prayer, the soul is returned to the body, which is seated with both soul and body. Then the two angels, Al-Munkar and An-Nakir, enter to question it as mentioned.
