Does Fast Charging Electric Motorcycles Damage Batteries Quickly?
JAKARTA — Fast charging on electric motorcycles is often considered to shorten battery lifespan. However, this assumption is not entirely accurate.
Indomobil Emotor CEO Pius Wirawan stated that the impact of fast charging on batteries actually depends heavily on the charging system used, particularly the communication between battery components and the charging device.
According to him, several factors must be considered during the battery charging process to maintain battery condition.
“There are several things that must be considered, such as temperature and the battery’s state of charge level. That is why charging from 80 percent to 100 percent is usually slower,” Pius said.
He explained that this charging slowdown is part of the battery protection system. As the battery approaches full capacity, the charging process typically shifts to slower or trickle charging.
“Each cell has different characteristics. For example, one cell may reach peak voltage first, around 76.4 volts. When fast charging detects that one cell has already become full, the system will slow down the charging,” Pius explained.
“That is why charging from 80 percent to 100 percent is usually done more slowly.”
With this mechanism, fast charging can still be performed without sacrificing battery lifespan, as long as the battery management system and charger work properly.
