Doctor warns persistent digestive problems should be assessed
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Recurring abdominal pain, acid reflux that does not improve, and changes in bowel habits should be assessed by a doctor to establish their causes and determine appropriate treatment.
Digestive surgery specialist dr Eko Priatno, Sp.B, Subsp.BD(K), of Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday that treatment for digestive disorders should be tailored to a patient’s condition and evaluation results, and does not always require surgery.
“Not all digestive disorders require surgery. We first look for the cause of the symptoms and evaluate the patient’s condition, then determine the most suitable treatment,” Eko said.
Gallstones that cause symptoms or complications can be treated by removing the gallbladder using laparoscopic surgery. This minimally invasive technique uses small incisions and, for some patients, can allow a faster recovery.
For patients with rectal cancer, doctors may consider an intersphincteric resection (ISR) to remove the cancer while preserving anal function.
“In rectal cancer cases, we try to preserve organ function when conditions allow. However, patient safety and removing the cancer in accordance with medical principles remain the priority,” Eko said.
For complex cases, such as certain tumours in the head of the pancreas, bile duct or duodenum, a Whipple procedure may be one treatment option. The procedure involves removing the affected part of the organ and reconnecting the digestive tract.
Whether a procedure is suitable is determined by examination results and planning with the medical team.
Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong director dr Margareth Aryani Santoso, MARS, said digestive care depended not only on the availability of technology and the ability to handle complex cases, but also on accurate diagnosis, safety, comfort and each patient’s needs.
