Doctor Says Andrie Yunus's Eye Injury Is Classed as Severe
Jakarta, VIVA – A shocking fact emerged in the continued hearing in the case of a chemical spray directed at KontraS activist Andrie Yunus at the Military Court on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
The eye injury suffered by Andrie was described as severe and permanent. This was revealed by ophthalmologist Faraby Martha of RSPAD when giving evidence as an expert in court.
Faraby explained that the chemical trauma to Andrie’s eye was at a high level, or grade 3 of 4 levels of severity for chemical eye injuries.
‘What I know is that the severity is grade 3 of 4. So the degree of severity, the chemical trauma to the eye is grade 3 of 4. In other words, it is severe,’ said Faraby.
The testimony was delivered in a session originally scheduled for the reading of the indictment against the defendants. However, the military prosecutor decided to call two additional doctors to bolster the evidence in the case.
‘Indeed, the agenda for today was to read the indictment. Nevertheless, we did require additional witnesses,’ said the Military Prosecutor.
In addition to Faraby Martha, the prosecutor also summoned plastic surgeon Parintosa Atmodiwirjo of RSCM. They are part of the medical team that has treated Andrie Yunus since 13 March 2026.
The panel of judges also highlighted the importance of expert testimony to determine the impact of the injuries on the victim, including potential long-term health effects.
‘I think this is significant because we want to see whether this is a serious injury? Is it minor? Will it affect his future health?’ said the presiding Judge.
Requests to call additional expert witnesses were not opposed by the defendants’ counsel.
‘Not at all,’ said the defence counsel in court.
During the session, the military prosecutor also explored the possibility of recovering Andrie Yunus’s eye condition. However, Faraby confirmed that the injuries suffered by the victim are permanent.
‘Permanent,’ Faraby stated.
Nevertheless, the medical team is said to still be striving to preserve the structure of the eyeball to prevent further damage.
‘The focus of treatment at present is to maintain the anatomical structure of the eyeball,’ he added.
Previously reported, the trial in the case of the chemical spray against KontraS’s Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus entered a new phase.
