Doctor Reveals Impact of Vaping on Sperm Quality

The assumption that vaping is safer than conventional cigarettes is not entirely accurate, particularly for men planning pregnancy. Dr. I Nyoman Palgunadi, a urologist specialising in urology at RS Windu Husada, has confirmed that vaping still poses a risk of compromising sperm quality due to its nicotine and cell-damaging substances.

In the male reproductive system, vaping can disrupt the sperm formation process. The impact extends beyond sperm count to affect sperm motility and overall quality. Reduced sperm quality makes it more difficult for sperm to fertilise an egg, thereby reducing the likelihood of pregnancy.

Varicocele surgery is performed to improve blood circulation around the testis and optimise sperm production. However, harmful habits such as vaping can impede the recovery process. Dr. Palgunadi used an analogy to illustrate this point: “It’s like fixing an air conditioner whilst still running a stove in the room.”

He emphasised that medical procedures must be accompanied by lifestyle changes to achieve maximum results. Since sperm requires approximately three months to regenerate, there remains a strong possibility of improvement with proper lifestyle modifications and cessation of vaping.
