Dr Linda Masniari, a Pulmonologist and Thoracic Oncology Subspecialist at MRCCC Siloam Semanggi, stated that poor air quality can increase the risk of lung health disorders, including lung cancer, necessitating that the public reduce exposure to pollution.

“Almost 85 per cent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking, while 15 per cent can be caused by non-smokers. Therefore, if we are passive smokers, the likelihood of developing lung cancer increases by 20 to 30 per cent,” Linda said during the MRCCC Siloam Semanggi Media Hospital Tour 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Linda noted that while smoking remains the primary risk factor for lung cancer, non-smokers are also at risk due to environmental exposure and other factors.

These environmental factors, she explained, include exposure to vehicle exhaust, smoke from burning firewood for cooking, and residential environmental conditions.

“Living in environments such as near rubbish dumps also presents a risk factor,” she added.

In addition to environmental factors, family history must also be considered. According to Linda, individuals with family members who have a history of lung cancer may face a higher risk due to genetic factors.

Linda stated that the public needs to recognise their specific risk factors and reduce exposure to pollution in their daily lives.

“Therefore, healthy air is extremely important,” she said.

She advised those living in areas with poor air quality to reduce outdoor activities to minimise pollution exposure.

“If the air in our environment is not good, it is better that we reduce outdoor activities,” she suggested.

Linda also reminded the public of the importance of avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke. She urged smoking family members to quit, as the link between smoke exposure and the incidence of lung cancer is very strong.

She noted that lung cancer in Indonesia is frequently found in age groups above 50 years. Consequently, the public needs to pay attention to risk factors and undergo medical examinations according to their specific conditions and risk levels.
