JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Professor Budi Wiweko, Chairman of the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association (POGI), stated that infertility in men and women is influenced by lifestyle factors and reproductive organ disorders. He explained that sperm-related issues account for 35% of infertility cases in men, whereas the primary cause in women is imperfect egg maturation, often linked to irregular menstrual cycles or endometriosis-related pain.

‘At Yasmin Clinic and across Indonesia, 35% of infertility cases are due to sperm factors, while the leading cause in women is egg maturation disorders, particularly among those with irregular periods or chocolate cysts,’ Budi told reporters at the relaunch of RSCM’s Yasmin Clinic in Jakarta on Tuesday.

To maintain sperm quality, he advised men to quit smoking, avoid tight underwear, long-distance cycling, saunas, and keeping mobile phones in trouser pockets. For women, he recommended tracking menstrual cycles to detect egg maturation issues. Budi stressed the need for broader education to ensure healthy offspring and to prevent infertility issues from being wrongly attributed solely to women.

The newly relaunched Yasmin Clinic at RSCM now prioritises sperm testing before examining female reproductive organs.
