Do Not Force It: Fasting Should Be Broken If These Dehydration Signs Appear
Fasting should be immediately discontinued if the body shows signs of dangerous dehydration, as this condition can disrupt organ function and threaten health.
Dr. Ihsanul Rajasa, Consultant Physician at Pondok Indah Hospital, stated that recognising dehydration symptoms is crucial so that individuals can make the right decision whilst fasting.
“If these dangerous symptoms appear, fasting should be stopped and fluids should be administered immediately,” said Dr. Ihsanul in an exclusive interview with Kompas.com on Wednesday (25 February 2026).
According to him, dehydration occurs when the body lacks a sufficient amount of fluid, causing organ function to become impaired.
This condition can develop during fasting if fluid intake during the pre-dawn meal (sahur) is inadequate or if the body loses excessive fluid through daytime activities.
This condition requires attention as it can progress to more serious dehydration.
If such symptoms appear, fasting should be discontinued immediately and the body should receive fluids promptly.
Ihsanul also cautioned that if the condition does not improve after fluids are administered, the person should seek immediate medical assistance.
Recognising dehydration symptoms early helps prevent more serious conditions from developing.
By understanding the body’s signals, an individual can determine when fasting can safely continue and when it must be stopped to protect their health.
