Do Electric Bicycles Threaten Consumer Confidence in Electric Motorcycles?
Jakarta — The presence of electric bicycles has become increasingly prevalent across various cities in Indonesia in recent years. Their relatively affordable prices and practical use have made these vehicles highly sought after by the public, particularly for short-distance mobility. Many people are choosing electric bicycles as an alternative to more complex daily vehicles.
Electric bicycles are often seen being used on major roads, although they are actually intended for specific areas and enclosed environments such as residential areas or neighbourhood roads. Pius Wirawan, CEO of Indomobil Emotor, explained that conceptually, electric bicycles and electric motorcycles serve different functions. “Electric bicycles are a short-distance transportation solution, whilst electric motorcycles are for medium-distance travel,” he said.
According to Pius, the presence of electric bicycles is not simply a matter of sales competition with electric motorcycles. Rather, what is more important is how the public understands the function of each vehicle type. Nevertheless, some prospective consumers are still waiting for developments in technology and its ecosystem. “People are indeed starting to become interested in buying electric motorcycles. But there are also those who have decided not to buy yet,” Pius said. “Some of them still need to confirm that electric motorcycles are truly a safe, sustainable, and reliable solution for the next three to five years,” he added.
For this reason, according to Pius, public education has become important so that the difference in function between electric bicycles and electric motorcycles is better understood. In this way, public confidence in two-wheeled electric vehicles can continue to increase.
