Denpasar (ANTARA) - Bali’s Forestry and Environmental Protection Agency (DKLH) is preparing guards at the Suwung landfill starting Wednesday (1/4) to ensure that organic waste is no longer dumped there. “There will be guards on duty there, we will keep watch, so let’s all go to the landfill on 1 April,” said the Head of DKLH Bali, I Made Dwi Arbani, in Denpasar on Thursday. Dwi Arbani stated that ahead of the organic waste restriction day, DKLH Bali personnel, along with the Denpasar City Government and Badung Regency Government, have been continuously socialising the waste sorting policy. This is not only to the public but also to self-managed waste collectors so that their rubbish truck drivers no longer bring mixed waste to the Suwung landfill. “We conveyed the socialisation that there will be treatment like this and they are ready to do it,” he said. The Head of DKLH Bali also mentioned that almost every day the Bali Provincial Government holds meetings with the Denpasar City Government and Badung Regency Government regarding solutions for organic waste that cannot be accommodated at the Suwung landfill. Several steps have already been taken, such as at the upstream level through modern composting and composter bags, and at the mid-level through TPS3R and TPST facilities, so that the organic waste restriction should be able to be implemented. DKLH Bali reminded that the decision by the Minister of Environment to restrict the entry of organic waste and only allow unprocessed residual and inorganic waste is appropriate. This is because organic waste can produce leachate that pollutes the sea and water, so the solution is to sort from the beginning. Not stopping at the restriction, Dwi Arbani also reminded that next on 1 August 2026 the Suwung landfill will be completely closed. Not only are there firm guards overseeing this policy, but Bali Governor Wayan Koster has also emphasised that there should be no more similar landfills in other districts in Bali. According to him, eliminating waste by transporting and dumping it without processing is merely a time bomb.
