DKI to Clean Rivers and Plecostomus Fish on Friday
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government will carry out river and waterway cleaning, as well as the removal of plecostomus fish in the capital, on Friday (17/4). “Why must these fish be cleaned out? Because they are indeed destructive. And from lab results, almost all the fish tested in the laboratory have levels exceeding the limit of 0.3 milligrams. They are more than that, so it would be very dangerous if consumed,” said Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung at City Hall, Jakarta, on Wednesday. In addition, Pramono stated, these fish can also destroy the existing embankments where they hide. Local fish are also eaten, including their eggs. Therefore, these fish need to be removed from Jakarta’s rivers. “Indeed, these fish can survive in all weathers, including in very unhealthy water conditions. And this fish originates from South America, where it has already become a problem and been eradicated,” he said. The cleaning activity will also serve to repair waterways, dredge mud, and so on. This is being done in preparation for the rainy season expected to occur in September.
