DKI taxi fleet

From Republika

Referring to a news item in Republika Nov. 18, 1996 on page 4
titled DKI Jakarta overloaded with 2000 taxis, we would like to
explain the following matters:

In relation with the number of taxi licenses in Jakarta, the
chief of Biro Bina Perekonomian Daerah DKI Jakarta, Hari Sandjojo
MJ, calculated that 25 percent of the fleet is usually kept in
reserve. Full operation (100 percent) of the fleet is strongly
encouraged (companies are usually running 80 percent of their
fleets alone because of high absenteeism). Based on the
foregoing, the total taxi licenses issued for this year are in
accordance with the estimated number.

About the new licenses issued to two new companies, Hari
Sandjojo MJ explained as follows:

a. PT Citra Pancakabraja's initial license was issued in
October 1992 (it is not a new license).

b. Koperasi Pembela Tanah Air's (Kopeta) license was issued in
February 1995 (it is also not a new license).

c. PT Cendrawasih Pertiwijaya's initial license was issued
recently in October 1996. It is one of the new licenses to
relieve the taxi shortage this year.

d. As for the total number of KOTAS' taxi fleet mentioned in
the license, the number is 261 units (not 1,219 units as
mentioned. The license is not new).

About Silver Bird taxis:

a. Its license was issued in 1992.

b. Their fleet consists of cars used by members of the Non-
Aligned Summit some years ago.

c. The company operates all its taxis in line with the
permitted total number.

d. Service is on an order basis (it does not run as a regular
taxi company).

This information is being provided to avoid public
misunderstanding and to put the picture of taxis in Jakarta in
the right proportions.
