DKI Regional Parliament Establishes Special Committee on Waste Management Following Bantargebang Landfill Collapse
The Jakarta Regional Parliament (DPRD DKI) has established a Special Committee (Pansus) on Waste Management following the tragic landslide at the Bantargebang Waste Treatment Site (TPST). The committee will simultaneously conduct a comprehensive evaluation of waste management policies and systems in the capital.
“The DPRD DKI Jakarta has established a Special Committee on Waste Management to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of policies, systems, and the direction of waste management in the capital,” said DPRD DKI member Raden Gusti Arief in a statement on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
Arief stated that the committee’s formation aims, among other objectives, to audit Jakarta’s waste management system comprehensively. The committee will also reassess Jakarta’s dependency on the Bantargebang facility.
“Accelerating the implementation of modern waste processing technology, ensuring safety protection for workers, waste collectors, and surrounding communities, and developing a roadmap for waste reduction from source to final disposal,” he explained.
Arief said Jakarta has delayed major solutions for too long. He argued that the city has only employed a piecemeal approach to the waste problem.
“If we do not take bold steps now, tragedies like this could happen again in the future,” he said.
He expressed hope that the Bantargebang tragedy would not be repeated. To this end, he wants waste management in Jakarta to be reformed.
“The tragedy in Bantargebang must be a turning point. Jakarta’s waste can no longer be managed using outdated methods. The DPRD DKI Jakarta must take serious action through the Special Committee on Waste Management,” he stated.
“As a global city, Jakarta cannot continue to function with a backwards waste management system. The time has come for Jakarta to undertake total reform in waste governance,” he added.
The Bantargebang waste landslide occurred on Sunday, 8 March 2026, at approximately 14:00 WIT. The incident happened suddenly, with waste collapsing and burying food stalls and several waste collection trucks. Search and rescue operations were conducted, resulting in seven people being found dead and six others rescued alive.
