JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government considers the review related to adjusting Transjakarta fares as a normal aspect of the public transportation policy evaluation process. However, the Provincial Government emphasises that no decision has been made so far regarding plans for a fare increase. “The point is, it’s just a review, which is routine, not an increase,” stressed Special Staff to the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Chico Hakim, when confirmed by Kompas.com on Saturday (25/4/2026). Chico explained that the fare adjustment review is conducted by considering various factors, including the economic conditions of the community. He mentioned that Transjakarta fares have not changed for about 21 years, while economic conditions and inflation continue to rise. “Because an increase must follow the situation and economic conditions of the community and consider many other factors as well,” he said. Nevertheless, Chico reiterated that no final decision has been made so far regarding the discourse on fare adjustments. He also conveyed that the Transjakarta subsidy of Rp 3.7 trillion from the 2026 Regional Budget only covers about 14 percent of operational needs, equivalent to Rp 9,000 to Rp 10,000 per trip per person. “Jakarta’s Provincial Minimum Wage has almost increased sevenfold since 2005, while the fare remains flat,” he said. With this subsidy scheme, the Provincial Government continues to improve services, including adding and updating the fleet as well as expanding Transjakarta routes. Transjakarta’s President Director, Welfizon Yuza, stated that the review has been conducted and the final decision rests with the local government along with the DKI Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council. “We have conducted a review related to the fare increase, which is currently still at Rp 3,500 since 2005. So about 21 years (without increase),” said Welfizon in a presentation at a meeting with Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD on Thursday (23/4/2026). He compared the current conditions to 2005, when the DKI Jakarta Provincial Minimum Wage was around Rp 800,000, while now it has reached about Rp 6 million. It is this condition that makes Transjakarta fares need to be adjusted. “The increase (in minimum wage) has already been 7-8 times, but our fare has held steady for 21 years,” he said.
