DKI Provincial Government to Redevelop 445 Slum Neighbourhoods, Railway Track Sides as Priority
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will redevelop 445 slum neighbourhoods. Slum areas along railway tracks will be a priority.
Special Staff to the Governor for Public Communication, Chico Hakim, stated that this redevelopment is part of the 2025-2029 Medium-Term Regional Development Plan (RPJMD). He mentioned that the Provincial Government targets the gradual redevelopment of 445 slum neighbourhoods.
“The Provincial Government targets the redevelopment of all slum neighbourhoods, totalling around 445, with 284 already addressed up to 2024. An additional target of 55 neighbourhoods for redevelopment in 2025, and completion gradually until 2027,” said Chico when contacted on Monday (27/4/2026).
According to him, redeveloping areas along railway tracks is one of the priorities because it relates to residents’ safety. In addition to being prone to train accidents, those areas are vulnerable to environmental risks.
Chico mentioned that the DKI Provincial Government supports the central government’s efforts to provide decent housing for residents along railway tracks, including in the Senen area. He said the programme is a breakthrough in reducing slum areas and providing more decent housing.
The DKI Provincial Government is also preparing several rusun (multi-storey apartments) as additional temporary relocation options, namely in Nagrak, Rorotan, and PIK Pulogadung. The Provincial Government is also preparing water access through PAM Jaya, health services, education, and public transportation.
“Related agencies will ensure access to health and education services for residents. Meanwhile, for transportation, it will be integrated to maintain residents’ mobility,” he stated.
Chico said that redeveloping areas along railway tracks not only impacts safety but also urban order. He stated that state land previously occupied informally can be returned to its function.
“This is part of the effort to realise a Jakarta that is safer, more orderly, and livable for all its residents,” he concluded.
Previously, Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait or Ara said that more than 324 housing units for residents along the Pasar Senen railway tracks in Central Jakarta are being prepared. Meanwhile, another 800 units will follow for the residents.
“Then also on the instructions of President Prabowo, from his field visit two weeks ago in the Senen area, construction has already started in the Jalan Kramat area. That was me together with Mr Donny (Danantara), instructions from Mr Rosan as well for around 300 houses in the Senen area,” said Ara after a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, on Monday (6/4).
