The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is moving swiftly to address the impact of a landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi. An ambitious target has been set for full operational normalisation to resume within seven days following the incident that occurred on Sunday, 8 March.

Asep Kuswanto, Head of the Jakarta Environmental Service (DLH), emphasised that the primary focus of the field team is currently the evacuation of landslide material blocking the river channel in the vicinity of Zone 4A. This step is critical to prevent water overflow onto roads that could disrupt waste logistics access.

Asep explained that waste material covering the river channel will be promptly relocated to more stable dumping areas, namely Zone 4 Small and Zone 4 Large. This rearrangement is being carried out with stricter safety standards to ensure those zones do not become unstable again.

“We are targeting waste management at the Bantargebang TPST to return to normal within one week. Currently, the team is handling landslide material in the river channel to prevent further water overflow onto roads,” said Asep in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 March.

In addition to waste evacuation, the Jakarta Environmental Service is also carrying out technical repairs to supporting infrastructure. Repairs to embankments at two locations affected by water overflow have become a priority to ensure the long-term safety of the TPST area.

The current reorganisation of dumping zones is focused on Head Bird Zone and Zone 4 Large to minimise the risk of secondary landslides amid extreme weather conditions.

Despite the recovery process underway, Asep assured that waste disposal services from Jakarta to Bantargebang continue to operate. Currently, operations have been shifted to three active points: Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 5.

“Current capacity remains secured at approximately 4,000 tonnes per day through those active zones,” he added.

The Government hopes that with the completion of Zone 4 Large reorganisation within one week, service capacity will increase by 1,500 tonnes of waste daily, bringing the total capacity of the Bantargebang TPST back to optimal levels.

Zone 5, covering 6.3 hectares, has currently reached approximately 2 million tonnes of capacity. This capacity is estimated to be able to accommodate waste for only two years ahead.
