The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is processing piles of green mussel waste in the Cilincing coastal area, North Jakarta, into paving blocks and a variety of useful souvenir products. DKI Jakarta’s Assistant for Economy and Finance, Suharini Eliawati, stated that this innovative waste handling approach, which previously went viral, has been realised through collaboration with academics. “Regarding the mussel waste, we have already collaborated with UI (Universitas Indonesia),” said Eli at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (15/4). She explained that the utilisation of these seashells is part of an ongoing programme, where in the previous stage, the material had been recycled into environmentally friendly infrastructure components. “Last year’s batch was turned into paving blocks,” said Eli. In the current development stage, Eli assured that the processed waste products will be expanded for use in public facilities and tourism trinkets. “Now, we are turning it into one of the facilities, for example, for toilet amenities, and then for souvenirs,” said Eli.
