Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has emphasised that his administration is preparing various solutions to reduce air pollution levels in the capital.

This was stated by Pramono in response to Jakarta’s air quality, which, according to the IQAir monitoring website on Sunday (3/5) at 06:00 WIB, was in the unhealthy category and even recorded as the worst in the world at one point.

“Clearly, Jakarta will quickly improve to address the pollution issue,” Pramono said in Central Jakarta on Monday.

Pramono explained that one of the main steps being promoted is the construction of a Waste-to-Energy power plant (PLTSa) in Jakarta.

According to Pramono, the facility is targeted to generate up to around 120 megawatts of electricity once fully operational.

He hopes that the presence of the PLTSa will reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based energy sources, which remain one of the contributors to emissions in the areas around Jakarta.

Today, the DKI Jakarta Government has also signed a cooperation agreement with Danantara for the construction of two Waste-to-Energy power plants (PLTSa) in the capital.

“If that can be reduced, especially in the Suralaya area where the air then enters Jakarta, it will significantly reduce pollution,” Pramono explained.

In addition to the energy sector, the DKI Provincial Government is also targeting a major transformation in the transportation sector.

Pramono mentioned that by 2030, the entire Transjakarta bus fleet is targeted to switch to electric buses.

“In the upcoming programme, I am targeting that by 2030, Jakarta will have all its buses as EV buses or electric buses, numbering around 10,000 units,” Pramono stated.

Currently, the transition of public transportation to electric is already underway. It is known that this year, the number of electric buses in Jakarta has reached 460 units, and will continue to be added in the coming years.

Previously, based on IQAir data, Jakarta’s air quality on Sunday morning recorded a score of 182 with fine particle PM2.5 concentrations reaching 100 micrograms per cubic metre, which falls into the unhealthy category.

In the ranking of cities with the world’s worst air quality at that time, Jakarta was at the top, followed by Dhaka (Bangladesh) with a score of 153, Lahore (Pakistan) 135, and Baghdad (Iraq) 134.
